It’s difficult to believe that we are already half way through the summer term. I would like to congratulate all the children in Year 6 for working so hard towards and during their SATs, they could not have applied themselves more. There are many events planned for the second half term. We have had to move our Key Stage 2 sports day and Buckingham Park School have kindly agreed to host on Friday July 12th; this has had to be done due to the condition of the Meads. We continue to work with Adur and West Sussex Councils around improvements to our part of the Meads and hope to have some exciting plans to bring forward before too long.
The Sponsored Walk is approaching fast (June 28TH), thank you to all the people who have already expressed interest in participating. Mrs Ali Bloomfield has decided to move on from Swiss Gardens at the end of the summer term, in order to give more time to her work as a therapeutic counsellor. It is difficult to put in words what Ali has done for the school and how much she will be missed. I am sure many of you will want to thank her personally, as she has affected so many children and families during her 12 years at Swiss Gardens. I know that Ali will keep in close contact with the school and with the many friends she has made over the years at Swiss.
Mrs Fran Brownjohn is also leaving at the end of term and taking well deserved retirement. Fran has worked at Swiss Gardens for 11 years and will be much missed by children, colleagues and parents and again I am sure many of will want to thank her personally for all the things she has done for the children at Swiss Gardens.
Ms Sam Eager is also moving on from her position as midday meals supervisor, we thank her for her work at Swiss Gardens and wish her well.

The following date have been declared INSET days for this school year – May 24th and June 3 rd. The 2nd September 2019 (children return to school September 3rd 2019) and the 20th July 2020 will also be INSET days, 3 more to be confirmed.
In accordance with our school policy could you please ensure that snacks at break time in Key Stage 2 are healthy – no crisps, chocolate or cakes thank you.
As you know the safety of the children at school is paramount. To that end a couple of reminders; the front gate to the school will be closed each morning at 9.00 a.m. and if you need to get in or out you will need to use the intercom system. In order to ensure we meet safeguarding requirements no parent/ carer should be in the top building or any part of the school without going through the front office and signing in. Thank you for your help with these issues.

Please ensure that you are parking safely and legally when parking around school. It is very important to maintain the safety of the children. It is also advisable not to keep engines running as it increases the pollution and can aggravate asthma and other breathing difficulties. We have had a few local residents calling in to express concerns that children and elderly people are having to walk around parked cars and into the road.
Safety Around School
When collecting older children please ensure that you do not allow younger siblings to scoot around the playground, use equipment or climb the walled gardens, this is potentially very dangerous and we do not want any unnecessary accidents.
Please do not send your child to school with medications in their bags, any medications must be given to their teacher or teaching assistant or to the office to ensure they are kept safe and secure.
Telephoning In The Afternoon
We cannot guarantee messages taken after 2pm will be given to the teachers on the same day (except, of course, in emergencies) Please try to ensure you call us before this time if there are late changes to collection arrangements.
Main doors to classrooms open at 8.45am and register is taken at 9.00am prompt for all year groups. Please ensure your child is on time; most days there are morning tasks such as Next Steps for children to complete, and so punctuality is essential.
Please remember to let us know if your child is absent by 9.30am.
Persistent lateness – we understand that sometimes there are genuine, unavoidable reasons for not being at school on time. However, we are finding that there are increasing amounts of persistent lateness. Just to remind parents/carers that following West Sussex County Council Guidelines the school can issue Fixed Penalty Notices for 10 instances of lateness. The current FPN is £60.00 per parent, per child.

Please remember that we have serious allergies in school. NUTS should not be being brought into school, this includes sauces such as pesto. Any home made products must be free of nuts and nut derivatives.
As you may have seen in Minutes, the last PTA meeting was please to approve a regular future donation to the school to support the IT provision for school year 2019/20 and beyond. Playground project is in hand and we hope to tie in with the Tesco Grant to make sure there are lots of new playground items in Mary’s Garden and the Playground.
We are sorry to announce the resignation of Jacqueline and Chloe both of whom have stopped down due to more regular work commitments. We welcome Barbara Booker to the team as our new Secretary and invite people to volunteer to be part of the Trustee team for next year. Volunteering and Fundraising is a great way to keep busy and fill your CV before returning to work after children as well as being a rewarding and fun experience. The specific role to fill is Treasurer but we are a very flexible team and work on all roles together and welcome anyone who might have an interest in volunteer work to contact us on email@example.com.
We are delighted that Reception Parent Simon Lewis will being doing Ride London sponsored bike ride in aid of Swiss Gardens PTA and we send our thanks. Links to his sponsorship site will be sent out soon.
The Summer Disco flyers have gone out this week and we hope to see lots of your little lovelies supporting this event.
Summer Fair planning is well underway and you’ll start seeing flyers and posters around the school and town soon – we are selling tables this year for £15.00 so if you know anyone who might want to hire a space please let us know – we also need Jars for our Hook a Jar stall and Books for our book stall which we hope will be a welcome addition on the day.
So far we have amazing raffle donations including a free Swimming Course and Penguins, 5 days at the Outdoors Project, Krater Comedy, Bowling, Middle Farm, Threesixtyfit, Fishers Farm and Tots Rocking Beats.
You have hopefully seen our email requesting volunteers for the Summer Events. If parents could just volunteer for one or two of the events we’d reduce the burden on our regular volunteers and make lots more money to help us contribute to the school as is so necessary.
Finally, Swiss Gardens Clubbing for Parents raised a fantastic £1000.00 for the school last term and will be at this years Beach Dreams Friday Night Kids Disco to entertain the kids big and small.

We have been to many sporting events this month. First, we had a Multi-skills cricket festival for some children in Year 2, who learnt some skills needed for cricket. The team were fantastic and showed off their sporting talents. We also had a Year 3 & 4 Tri-Golf tournament at Shoreham academy. The team were brilliant and got to learn some new skills. Our Year 4 girls’ football team had a fabulous day out at Brighton and Hove training ground, in the Sussex Albion cup finals. We won all the games in our group, but unfortunately lost in the final – so didn’t make it through to national finals, but well done to everyone who played…there’s always next year! A team of Year 5&6 athletes went to a Quadkidz event at Shoreham academy, involving running, jumping and throwing. Well done to Eddie who won the long distance race! Our Year 3/4 football team also played two games in the Adur League, against the Glebe and St Nics. We unfortunately lost both games 4-3 and 5- 2, but the team tried their best and showed great team spirit! Finally, our Year 5 Kwick Cricket team played other local schools in a festival at Shoreham academy. Well done to Noah, Oscar, Aidan, Max, Lewis, Ioan and Herbie who batted, bowled and scored lots of runs for the team!
Key Stage 2 Sports Day
We are looking forward to KS2 Sports day – on Friday 12th July 9.30 – 12.00 (weather dependent). Although we have had many years of fantastic Sports days on the Meads, due to the dry weather and constant use of the facilities, we have noticed a number of areas and holes which make the Meads not safe to use for the high-impact running races. We have therefore made the decision to hold our KS2 Sports day on the field of Buckingham Park Primary School, where they have running tracks marked and an even surface. The plan for the day will be to drop the children off at school as normal, and then, once the children have been registered, to walk together in classes to Buckingham Park Primary School. We will then hold our normal sports day there, before heading back to have lunch with families on the Meads at around 12.00pm. We will also ensure that we adapt our KS1 Sports day, which is on Wednesday 3rd July to make sure the activities are enjoyable and safe for all children to participate in. More information about both Sports days will be sent out nearer the time. Thank you for your continued support of PE in school.

This year, the Community Games are being held for Years 3, 4, 5 at Shoreham Academy. The dates are as follows:
Tuesday 11th June:

The children will be competing against other local schools in the following events:
- Cheerleading/Dance Workshop
A letter will go out after half term about the logistics of the event, however, Year 3 and 4 children will need to be dropped off at Shoreham Academy for 9.00am, and collected from the Academy at 12.00pm and brought back to school. Year 5 children will be walking to the Academy, but will need to be collected at 4.00pm. Please speak to other parents about sharing transport, if collecting or dropping off your child may be difficult. Thanks
Congratulations to Albatross Heidi Ogden who competed against over 30 of the best year 6 dancers in Sussex and came 2nd in the 10 year old ballet and 3rd in the 10 year old modern section at the recent Sussex Festival of Performing Arts at Roedean. Dancers from all across Sussex competed and the judge scored her 87 out of 100, and All England Distinction for both dances.
Natalia and Theo Summers. Both children played 3 musical pieces on the keyboard at the West Sussex Music Performance and did brilliantly. Theo achieved a special award for having a great attitude towards trying new things at Penguins swimming lessons. Natalia received a special 4th place ribbon for her race at the Penguins swimming gala.

2nd Hand Uniform
Did you know we accept any outgrown, good condition 2nd hand uniform? We have uniform sales from time to time when we have enough stock. Individual items can also be purchased via the Office for suggested donation of £1 per item.
Because of the way in which we have to submit the numbers to Chartwells (the company who provides our meals) it is essential that, wherever possible, your child keeps to a routine regarding which days they have a hot school lunch. This minimises waste which the school has to pay for. Chartwells requires us to submit our figures two weeks in advance. If your child is eligible for free or Universal school meals but there are days that they always bring a packed lunch, please let us know, as otherwise their meal ends up in the bin. We would really appreciate your help with this matter.
If you currently pay for your child’s meals but think that you might be eligible for some financial assistance, then please come and collect a form, in confidence, from the Office team. We would be happy to help. Meals need to be paid two weeks in advance, please ensure payment has been made before sending your child for a hot meal. If your child is ill on a day you have already paid for their lunch, then please contact Chartwells.
